Audi RS3 Sportback ready to rattle its segment
The hothatch segment just got turned up all the way to eleven with the local introduction of the Audi RS3 Sportback. Watch out, Mercedes A45 AMG, there is a new kid on the block!
The last time an Audi RS3 graced our roads was in 2011 – which now may seem like an eternity ago – and back then it was the pick of the bunch. Fast-forward a couple of years and we are in for a treat with the latest incarnation of this hothatch. The figures speak for themselves, but more on that in a bit.
At first glance the new Audi RS3 Sportback is characterised by a bulky, aluminium-look honeycomb grille nestled inside a high-gloss black frame. Large air inlets not only look aggressive, but provide additional air to the engine’s radiator and the transmission oil cooler. The fenders are beefed up all-round and two perfectly sized oval tailpipes add dramatic touches to an already enticing package. RS badges make their presence known on the bodywork.
Inside the RS-theme continues with a flat-bottom, multifunction RS steering wheel, stainless steel pedals and footrest, black dials in the RS instrument cluster, and sport seats covered in Fine Nappa leather, to mention only a few. Proper racing tech is included in the driver information system, like a boost pressure indicator, an oil temperature gauge, and lap timer.
The Audi RS3 Sportback has been produced in limited numbers for the global market, with only 174 units destined for South Africa. Each of these 174 RS3 Sportbacks is equipped with Audi’s celebrated turbocharged 2,5-litre five-cylinder engine, tuned to deliver 270 kW and 465 N.m of torque. The engine is eager to rev and possesses its own distinctive, throaty growl. Together with Audi’s famed Quattro-drive and seven-speed S-tronic transmission, this hatch is propelled from 0-100 km/h in a blistering 4,3 seconds.
Top speed is limited to 250 km/h, but can be (optionally) raised to 280 km/h.
The guaranteed thrust and pulling power of the Audi RS3 Sportback aren’t the only highlights of a promising package. Two flaps are placed in the exhaust to intensify the sound experience and can be controlled by the driver via Audi’s drive select system.
The Audi RS3 Sportback is now one of seven Audi RS products on our roads and is priced from R710 000. A five year/100 000 km Audi Freeway Plan come as standard.
