Aston’s new DB11 Volante keeps pace with coupe

Gentlemen rejoice! Prepare to feel the wind surging through your hair come 2018 as Aston Martin have confirmed the production of a convertible version of their drop-dead gorgeous DB11. The “lightly disguised engineering car”, according to Aston Martin, will feature the same iconic twin-turbo 5.2-litre V12 found in the coupé, making 447kW of power and 700Nm of torque. To top it all off, a spokesman revealed that the DB11 Volante is aiming to match the coupé’s 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds.

The Volante (French for “flying”) could eventually feature the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 from Mercedes-AMG, which is expected to make an appearance within the Aston Martin range from next year, starting with the successor to the V8 Vantage. This engine can be found in the Mercedes-AMG GT, producing between 372 and 410kW.

With the addition of the roof mechanism and chassis strengthening, combined with an aluminium body, the Volante will undoubtedly be heavier than the coupe; however we should expect an insignificant increase in weight considering the inherently strong body and chassis on the Volante.

With the four-seater convertible market growing larger and larger each year, expect the DB11 Volante to launch with a price tag around R3,2mil, putting it in roughly the same range as the Bentley GT Speed Convertible and the S63 AMG Convertible.
