BMW M2 Competition Revealed with M3 Power

One of BMW’s most hyped up cars, the BMW M2 Competition, has been leaked after BMW Australia accidentally revealed the car and its specs on their website.

The super-compact will be powered by the 3.0-litre straight six engine that it shares with the current BMW M3 and M4. The new engine will allow a power increase of 30kW, bringing the total power output up to 302kW. Torque is also increased up to 550Nm, resulting in a 0-100km/h sprint in 4.2-seconds, an improvement over the M2’s 4.3-seconds. Gearbox options are limited to a six-speed manual and seven-speed DCT dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

The decision to replace the older N55 motor with the newer S55 engine is based on the fact that the newer engine performs better and experiences less stress than the N55, which was running close to its highest reliable output.

The BMW M2 Competition will also be available with an adjustable M-Sport exhaust system, new chassis settings and a plethora of other driver settings, all dedicated to improving handling and dynamics. The design of the hardcore M2 will be familiar to existing M2 customers, aside from new wheels and the addition of sporty M-seats.

Following the release of the BMW M2 Black Shadow edition, it appears that customer demand for hotter M2’s is still not satisfied. BMW M vice-president Dirk Hacker revealed towards the end of 2017 that this exceptional demand is making special editions easier to justify, even in today’s uncertain economic climate.

“The M2 is tracking at 40-50% above our expectation in terms of sales, and demand for cars like the M2, or GTS and CS heritage models, is growing,” he said. “Any car that has true heritage to motorsport is an opportunity for us. New markets are always opening for those cars and that will increase, so long as we keep building cars that are sufficiently special.”
