Geneva 2010: Two More Exclusive Bugatti Veyrons

Posted on 05 March 2010 by Scott

www.SACarFan.co.za - Limited Edition Bugatti Veyron

Bugatti has presented two bespoke Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport models for audiences at the 2010 Geneva International Motor Show. They are there to show more of what Veyron buyers can choose when customising their cars.

On the first car, the bonnet, monocoque and rear section are made of carbon fibre, tinted in a Royal Dark Blue colour. The hue also comes through on the air intakes, grilles and inner sides of the horseshoe-shaped spokes in the wheel rims. Inside, the dashboard, centre console, seats and door trim panels have been crafted out of a dark blue Indigo leather. Bugatti has already sold this car direct from the factory for €1.75 million.

On the second car, dark grey carbon fibre can be seen on the upper body and the rims are finished in polished aluminium, while the EB logos and all screws are made of sparkling aluminium. Similarly the dashboard, centre console, seats and interior trim panels are leather-bound with a soft contrast in silver. This particular car has also been spoken for, at a price of €1.65 million.

Bugatti Press Release

Where customisation becomes an art form

Two unique Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport models at the 2010 Geneva International Motor Show

Geneva, 2 March 2010 – One year on from the launch of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. will be exhibiting two customised Grand Sport models at the Geneva International Motor Show 2010. A special exhibit on the Bugatti stand will also give visitors to the show a glimpse at the technology that lies beneath the bodywork of the Grand Sport.

Throughout his life, Ettore Bugatti constantly experimented with different colour schemes and materials as he sought to create his unique cars. Today, Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. continues this tradition, and is constantly expanding the range of options it offers on the basis of suggestions received from customers. In discussion with the design and engineering team, buyers of Bugatti cars can tailor their vehicles to their personal preferences by choosing from a wide array of exquisite materials and paint finishes. The two models on display in Geneva showcase the ever growing range of options available to new Veyron and Grand Sport owners.

Two-tone colour scheme with Royal Dark Blue carbon fibre and Arctic White

On the first of the two Grand Sport models exhibited in Geneva, the bonnet, monocoque and rear section are made of carbon fibre tinted in a Royal Dark Blue colour that shows off the lustre of the fibre. Air intakes and all grilles (except the highly polished radiator grille) are likewise finished in Royal Dark Blue, creating a striking contrast between the central part of the car and the Arctic White side panels. The inner sides of the horseshoe-shaped spokes in the wheel rims are also painted Royal Dark Blue. The EB logos on the wheels, and fuel and oil filler cap are still made of polished aluminium as usual. The characteristic Bugatti two-tone colour scheme thus extends down to the last detail.

The combination of blue and white is also found inside the cabin. The dashboard, centre console, seats and interior trim panels are all made of dark blue Indigo Leather, with white stitching on the steering wheel, seats, centre console and gearshift knob making a striking contrast. The quilting pattern gives the vehicle’s interior a dynamic look in keeping with its performance. The car has already been sold for 1.75 million euros (ex works).

Horizontal two-tone colour scheme with dark grey carbon fibre and polished aluminium

The second of the two display models follows a very different interpretation of the two-tone concept, one that first appeared on the Bugatti Sang Bleu. The upper section of the body – including the doors and side panels – is made of dark grey carbon fibre, framed whilst the bottom part of the car is finished in polished aluminium. The lower air intake grilles are polished to a brilliant shine. The wheel rims are the same as those on the Bugatti Pur Sang, with Ebony Pearl inner sides and a Diamond Cut face. The EB logos and all screws are made of sparkling aluminium.

As in the first car, the dashboard, centre console, seats and interior trim panels are upholstered in leather, but the silver colour used here does not contrast as strongly with the white stitching as the blue, giving a softer, more elegant feel. This car too has already been sold, with a price tag of
1.65 million euros (ex works).

Customers who find themselves inspired by the two display models can design their own Bugatti in the “Customisation lounge”. In this dedicated area of the Bugatti stand, they will find an extensive collection of paint and material samples, allowing them to select the ideal combination for their own Grand Sport or Veyron coupé.

Where technology becomes an art form

These spectacular vehicles are the result of painstaking craftsmanship combined with state-of-the-art materials and technologies. At this year’s Geneva International Motor Show, some of the technical secrets of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport will be revealed to the public for the first time. Almost as soon as they were launched, the Veyron and the Grand Sport acquired cult status and secured their own niche in automotive history. They were recently chosen as the car of the decade by two influential English-language motoring titles, Top Gear and Robb Report.

The Bugatti stand in Geneva will feature an exhibit of a Grand Sport broken down into its two main sections: the front end/monocoque, and the rear section with the engine and gearbox. The two sections are normally joined together by titanium bolts. The most striking thing about the rear section is the unique titanium exhaust system. This is surrounded by the electrohydraulic wing-spoiler array. The double wing, which both provides aerodynamic stability and functions as a brake, is normally hidden from view but here it is clearly visible. At the other end of the rear section, the two engine-turned aluminium oil sumps can be seen. The high-strength CFRP roll bar above these is visible on the passenger side, but hidden by an air scoop on the driver’s side. The monocoque, incorporating main beams and cross members made of lightweight, high-strength carbon, can be recognised by its fibre structure. A saddle fuel tank is built into this in a protected position, with a firewall between it and the engine. The ceramic brake discs and the polished stainless steel suspension, which are normally hidden behind the wheels, are also clearly visible in the technical exhibit.

This unique insight into the workings of the Veyron is sure to be a big attraction at the show. It is complemented by a separate display of the Veyron’s engine and gearbox. Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. was the first manufacturer in the world to offer a seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox, which is mounted longitudinally in front of the mid-engine in the all-wheel-drive Veyron. Both gearbox and engine use a dry-sump design, primarily because this helps to achieve a lower centre of gravity.

Distribution of engine torque between the two axles is handled by a Haldex clutch located behind the front-axle differential, while the rear-axle differential is notable for its multi-disc differential lock.

At 710 millimetres in length, the car’s 16-cylinder mid-engine is no bigger than a conventional V12 unit. Its compact dimensions are made possible by the unique W layout, which consists of two offset double row banks, each comprising eight cylinders and with a bank angle of 15 degrees. The two banks are at an angle of 90 degrees to each other, and are housed in to a single crankcase. This means that they function as a single engine, aspirated by four turbochargers. The engine has a maximum output of 1001 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, and develops 1,250 newton-metres of torque between 2,200 and 5,500 rpm.

2009 was a difficult year for the whole automotive industry, but Bugatti still delivered 50 vehicles. To date, 255 customers have ordered a Bugatti Veyron, and 230 of these have now received their car. Nine of the 26 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sports ordered to date have so far been delivered.

The Shocking Costs Of Running A Veyron

Posted on 25 January 2010 by Scott

You’re probably really jealous of those lucky few driving around in a Bugatti Veyron. Well, once you figure out how much it costs to maintain one, you won’t be that disappointed.

You may think that those lucky guys driving the Veyron can very well afford the operating cost of the supercar, but when you hear stories of one Veyron owner who has his trailered to his favorite road while he follows in an executive jet since it’s cheaper – you start to get a little curious.

A routine service for a Veyron reportedly costs a whopping £12 866 (R160 825), whereas an annual service for a Ferrari Enzo is £1680 (R21 000). A set of new tyres will set you back £23 500 (R293 750), and that’s because they have to be capable of handling a top speed of 407 km/h. Every fourth tyre change, the Veyron’s wheels must be replaced, leaving you with a bill of £7 050 (R88 125) per wheel!

Feel better? Good. So do we.

Bugatti chose the Dubai Motor Show to conclude its Centenary celebrations by unveiling three special editions of the Veyron hypercar.

The ‘Sang d’Argent’ and the Grand Sport ‘Soleil de Nuit’ are one-off models while the ‘Nocturne’ will be limited to five cars only, all of them available exclusively to Middle East customers. Prices range from €1.45 million for the Sang d’Argent, €1.55 million for the Soleil de Nuit, and €1.65 million for the Nocturne. First deliveries take place in the first quarter of 2010.

The Nocturne features a polished aluminium bonnet, galvanised side windows, special polished custom rims and polished aluminium upper body parts at the rear. The interior is dominated by a black nano-coated magnesium dashboard while the centre console is finished in galvanised platinum.

The one buyer allocated to the unique Sang d’Argent will get subtle silver metallic paintwork, polished aluminium doors and front wings, Grand Sport wheels and silver air intakes on the roof. Its so-called Havanna interior features a quilting pattern on the seats and saddle, as well as personalised items make the Sang d’Argent exceptionally special.

Last on the list is the Soleil de Nuit or Sun of the Night, another one-off model that comes finished in a polished aluminium and Black Blue metallic surface. The blue colour is also evident in the upper body parts and in the inner side of the rims (the outer side has a diamond cut). Occupants will be greeted by a bold burnt orange interior.

Exclusive Bugatti Galibier 16 C Time Piece

Posted on 14 October 2009 by Scott

www.SACarFan.co.za - Parmigiani Bugatti Tourbillon

When Bugatti revealed the 16 C Galibier concept in September, it was impossible not to have noticed the luxurious interior. On the dashboard you might have noticed a watch, which of course is no ordinary time piece. It’s made by Parmigiani Fleurier, who have a long history with producing watches for Bugatti – one of which was the Parmigiani Fleurier Bugatti Type 370 wristwatch, released to celebrate the launch of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 and designed so the driver can read the time without taking their hands of the steering wheel.

But for the Galibier concept, Parmigiani has created the Bugatti Tourbillon. A watch that has four purposes. First it will fit into at least two spots on the car (center of the dashboard, as well as near the instrument panel cluster), fit into a wrist watch strap module, fit into a pocket watch module, and finally into a desk clock module.

The watch indicates the time (of course), exposed tourbillon, as well as a prominent power reserve indicator. The watch is purposefully made to be easy to read from a distance. At this point not much more is known about the time piece other than it’s available in either gold or platinum and has an engraving pattern all over, which is meant to look like the famous tightly woven metal of the Bugatti front grill.

Bugatti Veyron Sang Bleu Shines At Frankfurt

Posted on 23 September 2009 by Scott

www.SACarFan.co.za - Bugatti Veyron Sang Bleu

A Frankfurt Motor Show isn’t complete without an appearance of sort from one of the kings of super cars, Bugatti. Thankfully the boys from Molsheim didn’t disappoint, after showing up and displaying the super-duper rare Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Sang Bleu special edition, to commemorate the brand’s 100th anniversary.

Bugatti has had a history of producing one-off special editions of their celebrated super car, the Veyron and the Sang Bleu is the latest example. Just like all other special-edition Veyrons out in the world, the Sang Bleu has been locked and loaded with one of the most powerful performance engines in the world. The car is powered by a mighty quad-turbocharged W16 engine with a maximum output of 746 kW (1001 HP) and 1 250 N.m of torque. In terms of speed, the Sang Bleu’s speedometer will climb to an eye-watering 407 km/h.

As far as the exterior goes, the Sang Bleu features a shimmering royal blue and chrome silver paint job, with matching two-tone white and royal blue wheels, making the Sang Bleu stand out from the other, more ‘common’ Veyron’s out on the streets.

And if standing out is what turns you on, then you’ll be pleased to learn that the Veyron Sang Bleu is so limited that only one was ever built. The one you’re seeing at Frankfurt is the only one of its kind on the planet and unfortunately for those who’re reaching for their wallets – the car has already been sold for a staggering USD2.7 million!

Bugatti Galibier 16C Concept

Posted on 16 September 2009 by Scott

www.SACarFan.co.za - Bugatti Veyron Galibier

With the Veyron’s production cycle ending in 2012, Bugatti will have a slot to fill in their high dollar über performance segment (which is, of course, their only segment). They’re currently gauging interest of the four door category with the unveiling of this, the Galibier 16C concept. With Saab like headlights, side profile reminiscent of the new Aston Martin Rapide and a rear-end with hints of Porsche Panamera, it looks pretty good.

Power will come from the same 16 cylinder engine as the Veyron, only this time around it will be equipped with twin superchargers instead of four turbochargers. The body panels will be a combination of carbon fibre and aluminum to keep weight down, and will be styled after the Bugatti Type 57 Atlantique from the early 30’s. This means that you can now haul four people over 320 km/h instead of just two – simply marvelous.

Spyker Unveils Their New C8 Aileron Spyder

Posted on 17 August 2009 by Scott

www.SACarFan.co.za - Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder

The Netherlands based luxury sports car manufacturer, Spyker, has unveiled the C8 Aileron Spyder at this weekend’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in the United States. For those who may not be up to speed on this rather mysterious car company, allow us to shed a little light on Spyker.

First off, this is no fly by night operation, but rather a company with a long history in coach building and aviation, which commenced way back in 1898 with two brothers, Jacobus and Hendrick-Jan Spijker. They were commercially minded even in the 19th century, when the brothers decided to change their surname to Spyker, for better recognition in foreign markets.

Innovation and quality was hallmark of the brand from their very first car, the technically advanced Spyker 60 HP in 1903. This was the first car with a six-cylinder engine, along with four-wheel drive and four-wheel brakes. Around the same time, Spyker introduced the ‘dust shield chassis’, which was a streamlined tray on the cars under body, and was patented. The image of Spyker cars was given a substantial boost in 1907, when a private entry stock standard Spyker 14/18HP Tourer finished in second place in the gruelling Peking to Paris race. They soon became known as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of the continent, such was their attention to detail and subsequent quality.

But with World War I imminent, there was a worldwide slump in the luxury car market, and Spyker merged with the Dutch Aircraft Factory N.V, and the new company developed and built fighter aircraft. This new line of business also influenced a new logo and company slogan, which is still in use today. ‘Nulla tenaci invia est via’: ‘For the tenacious no road is impassable’ and the logo sported a spoke wheel with a propeller across the centre.

The Spyker name became even more famous with record-breaking cars like the Spyker C4, built by the legendary German engineer Wilhelm Maybach. The C4 was an extraordinary car employing a double ignition system with Bosch high-tension magneto, and twin spark plugs per cylinder. Unfortunately, the Spyker Company ceased trading in 1925, but like Bugatti, the brand was reborn in 2000 when the Spyker C8 Spyder was unveiled to the public at the Birmingham Motor Show.

They don’t mind racing these hand built super cars either, at Le Mans this year the fast moving, and utterly reliable, Spyker C8 Laviolette GT2R finished fifth outright, with some great driving by Jarek Janis (CZE) and Tom Coronel (NLD).

The C8 Aileron Spyder pictured above, is a prototype for the open top model, which is expected to go into production early in 2010.

Inside the C8 Aileron the quality of the switchgear and materials is first rate. Particularly eye-catching is the fully exposed gear change mechanism in polished chrome, and the Pagani Zonda-like quality of the overall interior fit out. An Audi 4,2-litre V8 engine, producing 298 kW mated to a six-speed Getrag manual shift gearbox, provides power and a six-speed ZF transmission with paddle shifters is also an option. Suspension is an all-independent double wishbone set up developed by Lotus engineering, and is said to provide excellent balance during cornering. Put that down in part, to the forged aluminium components, which reduce unsprung mass. Brakes are courtesy of AP Racing, which has been a partner with Spyker from day one. Carbon ceramic rotors will be available as an option on production cars. The sound system is also special, from high-end audio company Kharma, complete with iPod connection and digital radio.

2010 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport

Posted on 03 July 2009 by Scott

www.SACarFan.co.za - Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport

Last year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California was the setting for the very first public presentation of the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport. The response was extremely positive and now production of this roadster – limited to 150 units – is to begin at Molsheim with the first vehicles being delivered this summer at a price of about US$1.9 million (excluding taxes and transportation). The first 50 of these are going exclusively to registered Bugatti customers. So far 30 Grand Sports have been ordered. Chassis number one, auctioned at the Pebble Beach Auction by Gooding and Company last summer, sold for $3.19 million.

Since its appearance last year, significant modifications have been made to the vehicle’s complex structure to enable open-top driving, thereby adding a new dimension to this high-performance sports car. Incorporating a host of new and innovative safety and equipment features, it is the world’s fastest and most exciting roadster. It is immediately recognizable because of its slightly higher windscreen, stylized daytime running lights, and lightweight, transparent polycarbonate roof.

www.SACarFan.co.za - Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport

The main challenge in developing the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport with its removable roof resulted from the unique structure of the fixed-roof Bugatti Veyron. An optimum combination of rigidity and lightweight engineering ensures the monocoque passenger cell of the original model is extremely strong, while weighing an absolute minimum. As the roof is an integral part of the vehicle’s structure, removing it meant the load paths had to be completely redesigned to maintain the vehicle’s rigidity and crash safety, and to offer additional protection from side impacts and rolling.

When the roof is closed, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport can reach 403 km/h, while speeds of up to 356 km/h are possible with the roof off. Should it rain, an innovative soft-top roof, like an umbrella, stored in the luggage compartment, can be opened up at any time.

www.SACarFan.co.za - Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport

Along with moisture-resistant, backstitched leather, a range of new equipment features has been added to the interior, including a reversing camera with 2.7-inch monitor integrated in the rear-view-mirror, and the ‘Puccini’ sound system with digital signal processor.

Porsche And Volkwagen Set To Merge

Posted on 07 May 2009 by Scott

Porsche has finally abandoned plans to acquire a larger share of Volkswagen, of which it already own 51 percent. Instead the two German companies have revealed plans to merge into one integrated company within four weeks.

Currently the VW group and Porsche are managed independently of each other. Under the merger 10 brands will be managed by one management board.

www.SACarFan.co.za - Porsche Beetle

The decision to merge the two companies comes after Porsche’s attempts buy up to 75 percent of VW for a controlling share have been repeatedly blocked.

Volkswagen has welcomed the merger and already representatives from Porsche and VW are in discussions about the form of the new company.

The state of Lower Saxony, where VW is based is also taking part in discussions, as a 20 percent stake holder in VW they have the power to veto strategic decisions.

SACarFan - Porsche / Volkswagen Takeover

Under the new company VW’s nine brands: Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Scania, Skoda, Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti, Seat and Audi will each maintain a unique sense of identity. Porsche will also maintain its identity.

The new entity will allow Porsche greater access to technology and systems from the Volkswagen catalogue, not that it’s been lacking in that department so far.

Both companies can now get back to their primary business of building great cars.
