Audi Dominates 78th Le Mans 24-Hour Race
Posted on 14 June 2010 by Scott
Audi Motorsport Boss, Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich believes that the teams 9th Le Mans win was the toughest so far. “Peugeot looked like they had beaten Audi for the second straight year” he told Autosport, “but the 908’s all suffered failures”.
Audi’s revised R15 TDI Plus came through to take a one-two-three win, led by the No 9 car of Timo Bernhard, Mike Rockenfeller and Romain Dumas. “At the beginning it was a little unlucky for us but at the end it all worked fine” said Ullrich. “It’s a great reward for all the work that everyone has done. I think this has to be the hardest Le Mans we’ve ever done.”
Dr. Ullrich was congratulated by his counterpart at Peugeot their Director of Motorsport Olivier Quesnel, straight after the race and he paid tribute to Audi’s arch rival and remarked on the camaraderie between the two teams. “I think that they know that we have done a great job” said Ullrich. “In sport when someone wins then someone else loses, but when the loser comes and congratulates the winner it is all very sporting. That is what we did last year and that’s what Peugeot has done this year. It has been a fantastic battle, we’ve invited the Peugeot guys to a party tonight and we hope that they will all come”.
The Porsche 911 GT3 RSR continues its domination of the GT2 class, taking home the 98th win for the manufacturer at the 2010 Le Mans event. Positions three, five, seven and eight also went to drivers of the 335 kW Porsche. Moreover, the winning 911 also clinched the environmental “Michelin Green X Challenge” award as the GT car with the best efficiency. The Porsche victory was made even sweeter by the fact that the GT2 class was well supported and fiercely contested this year, with seven manufacturers and 18 race vehicles competing. The winning Porsche was followed home by the Ferrari F430 GT piloted by Farnbacher, Simonsen and Keen, with a second Porsche 911 GT3 RSR (Holzer, Westbrook and Scheider), taking the third spot on the podium.
