Saving the Defender name is first step for new model

A replacement for the current Land Rover Defender, which ended production earlier this year, is still under consideration for 2019. This was given added impetus with more trademark filings for the Defender name.

In May, Jaguar Land Rover applied to renew the European trademark and earlier this month did a similar process in the Philippines. At this point it is believed that both requests are still pending but there shouldn’t be much preventing its approval.

“The registering of trademarks in various categories and classes is a routine practice,” a JLR spokesperson told Autocar.

“The Defender remains a key part of our future product strategy, and the development of the next generation model remains on track as does our ongoing Land Rover Reborn programme, through Land Rover Classic.”

What will the new Defender look like? If we had our way, not much different to the outgoing model with a smattering of noise insulation material and the basics of smartphone integration.

Rumor has it that next Defender will join a range of variants including one from the company’s expanding Special Vehicles Operation and a SVX model kitted with every off-road accessory.
